We Caught the Reading Bug!

The summer is wrapping up with a big buggy party at Chester's Event Center (5201 Cimarron Rd. N.W. Piedmont, OK 73078. Here's a map: http://www.chesterandcrew.com/map.htm) on Saturday, August 2.

The party starts at 10:00AM. We'll play games and win prizes, hear some stories, watch some skits, eat some snacks,and do some singing and dancing. A good time is guaranteed, or your money back! The party is open to everyone, and there is no charge! See you Saturday at 10:00!

Library Quilters

The group is currently working on a ladybug quilt to be donated to the Piedmont Education Foundation as a silent auction item.Future projects will incude OU OSU and Piedmont T-shirts for the D.U.C.K Week Auction in March, Handprint valances for the Children's Room, a wild flower quilt and insect quilt as Summer Reading projects. Everyone is welcome to join in on Friday mornings at 10:00 A.M.

Quilting 101 Class starts Friday, October 5th at 10:00

Join quilter Rita Roberts as she teaches quilting basics in a 4-week session beginning Friday, October 5th ,at 10:00am at the Piedmont Public Library. Learn about useful tools and notions, tricks for cutting, fabric and color selection, assembling and finishing quilts. Roberts will also guide interested participants through the construction of a Desden Plate Christmas Wreath block using their own fabrics.

Elementary aged kids are invited to join Kids Aloud

The Piedmont Library is hosting a new book club called 'Kids Aloud', beginning Thursday, September 27th, at 4:00pm. This read-aloud bookclub will run for about 6 weeks. Rhonda will introduce the book "From the Mixed-up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler", and will read the first several chapters aloud. Club members will then be invited to take turns reading aloud. No one is required to read, but all are welcome to. The bookclub is open to children in grades 2 through 6, and registration is required. In addition to reading, the club members will do activities related to the story, and will enjoy refreshments.

The selected book by E.L. Konigsburg is a Newbery Award winner. The book is on the Accelerated Reader lists at Piedmont Elementary, Stoneridge Elementary and Middle School of Piedmont. In the story, 12-year old Claudia feels unappreciated, and decides to run away from home. She allows her younger brother Jamie to tag along, because he has some cash. The children go to New York City where they hide out at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. For a week the children elude the guards and exploit the opportunities of the museum: they sleep in a royal bed, bathe in the cafeteria pool, and pass part of each day in study on the fringe of lecture tours. One day a marble angel is added to the Museum collection, and Claudia is convinced that it is a Michelangelo and is determined to prove it: she will authenticate Angel and become a heroine before going home. But the only way to prove the provenance of the statue is to work with it's former owner, cantankerous old Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler.

End of Summer Hoe Down

Summer Readers celebrated their reading success with a Hoe Down on July 28th. The kids enjoyed games like a "Boot Toss", "Pony Express Relay" and "Shoot Out at the Better-than-OK Corral". Chester the Clown was on hand to entertain and amaze, and the Piedmont Centennial Players made their theatrical debute with a series of skits and readers theater. The morning ended with a rousing Hoe Down Hokey Pokey. Can't wait for next summer!

Monty Harper brings CenTUNEial Celebration to Library

It's a Settler's Life

Join us Tuesday, July 10th at 1:00pm when the Oklahoma History Center presents "It's a Settler's Life."
Meet a pioneer settler, and hear about the tools and items that settlers used in their daily lives as they worked to "prove up" their land. The "settler" will have actual tools and items on hand for kids to explore.

The program is intended for elementary school aged children, but of course the entire family is welcome to attend. For families with younger children, we'll have a quilt and native american rug craft Tuesday morning at 10:00.

OK Kid was a big hit!

The Library hosted Marty Tipton, also known as the Oklahoma Kid, as our weekly performer on June 26th.

Marty is a 4th generation Wild West Show performer, with ties to the 101 Ranch and is a distant relation to Will Rogers.

Marty enthrall the audience with stories of Oklahoma history, wild west show performers that his family has been associated with, and with his roping skills.
The rain kept us in the building, so Marty had to tone it down a bit, but it was still clear that he has a talent for roping.

After his demonstration, Marty loaned out kid-sized ropes, and taught the kids roping basics. Marty was very entertaining, education and kid-friendly. We look forward to having him visit again soon.

Piedmont Express Centennial Story Time

Call now to reserve your place at the first ever Piedmont Express Centennial Story Time at the Express Clydesdale Barn, Monday, April 30th. The Barn will open at 6:30 to allow families time to meet the clydesdales, then story time will begin at 7:00 in the barn loft. There will be games for the children, snacks, songs, stories and fun! Spring Break Fun!

Piedmont kids are out of school this week for Spring Break. To help stave off boredom, the Library is hosting Spring Break Fun afternoons March 21st through March 23rd. On Wednesday we'll have board and card games available, as well as snacks and a library scavenger hunt. On Thursday we'll craft items using Duct tape. On Friday, we'll make disgusting but yummy snacks, make slime, and play gross games. All school age kids are welcome.

Summer is sneaking up on us! The dates for this years program have been set. Summer Reading kickoff will be June 4th, and the program will run 8 weeks. We've lined up some exciting presenters to entertain and educate. This years program supports the Oklahoma Centennial celebration, with the theme "OK Kids--A Kaleisescope". If you have some ideas for Oklahoma Centennial projects, let us know!
