Elementary aged kids are invited to join Kids Aloud
The Piedmont Library is hosting a new book club called 'Kids Aloud', beginning Thursday, September 27th, at 4:00pm. This read-aloud bookclub will run for about 6 weeks. Rhonda will introduce the book "From the Mixed-up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler", and will read the first several chapters aloud. Club members will then be invited to take turns reading aloud. No one is required to read, but all are welcome to. The bookclub is open to children in grades 2 through 6, and registration is required. In addition to reading, the club members will do activities related to the story, and will enjoy refreshments.
The sele
cted book by E.L. Konigsburg is a Newbery Award winner. The book is on the Accelerated Reader lists at Piedmont Elementary, Stoneridge Elementary and Middle School of Piedmont. In the story, 12-year old Claudia feels unappreciated, and decides to run away from home. She allows her younger brother Jamie to tag along, because he has some cash. The children go to New York City where they hide out at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. For a week the children elude the guards and exploit the opportunities of the museum: they sleep in a royal bed, bathe in the cafeteria pool, and pass part of each day in study on the fringe of lecture tours. One day a marble angel is added to the Museum collection, and Claudia is convinced that it is a Michelangelo and is determined to prove it: she will authenticate Angel and become a heroine before going home. But the only way to prove the provenance of the statue is to work with it's former owner, cantankerous old Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler.
